I've been experimenting with a Microbat character for a story I am writing. My character needs to be someone who reflects the nocturnal behaviours of little insectivorous Bats while also showing something of their 'big spirit in a small body' attitude that I love about them and relate so much to.
Without wanting to reinforce the mythical connection between Bats and vampires, I also have to admit that I find the night, darkness and shadowy things completely enchanting. I love the idea of my Bat character having wings that double as a cloak that helps him to blend into the shadows of the night.
But instead of being vampiric, my creature of the night Bat character is more of an unsung superhero - I took a lot of inspiration for his wing cloak from various comic drawings of Batman and Darkwing Duck! My Bat hero doesn't get flashy news coverage or celebrations for his heroic deeds - he's the guy who does the night shift and that's just how he likes it.
My yet-to-be-named Bat hero is fierce, determined, and full of that big spirit energy. He zips around through the night catching bugs and getting things done with plenty of cheeky self-narration as he goes! His life is all about navigating the struggles of the dark while fully embracing his weird eccentricity as a strength. With all the oddness of his people, my Bat is a proud creature of the night!
